GBHL200 Introduction to Global Health (3 Credits)

Designed to introduce you to global health. Global health challenges are immensely complex and underscore the multiple interconnections among social, economic, environmental, and biotechnological dimensions of health problems worldwide. Global health encompasses health care systems, medical practices, and ideas about illness in cross-cultural contexts, as well as issues of health development, global health inequity, racism and other -isms, and human rights issues. We will explore theoretical frameworks and practical perspectives shaping the global health ecosystem domestically, internationally, and virtually.

Credit Only Granted for: GBHL200 or MIEH400.

GBHL210 Careers in Global Health (1 Credit)

Designed to introduce you to the global health careerscape: the various paths, current and emerging trends, possible employers, and essential skills for future professionals. We will use campus and external resources for career exploration as you identify opportunities to build your professional network and gain experience. Prepare to engage in future global health experiential learning through research, internships, study abroad or field work

Recommended: Sophomore standing.

Restriction: Must have earned fewer than 90 credits.

GBHL310 Introduction to Global Health Literacy (3 Credits)

The ability to access, understand, appraise, and use information is critical for the improved health and well being of populations around the world. This course will address how population health is affected by politics, culture, geography, and/or social determinants of health, with a focus on contemporary global health challenges including climate-related disasters and pandemic preparedness. Students will explore and gain skills related to health communication and education.

Prerequisite: Must have completed Fundamental Studies: Academic Writing.

Recommended: Enrolled in or completed SPHL100 or GBHL200.

Restriction: Must have earned a minimum of 30 credits; and must not not have taken HLTH431.

GBHL386 Global Health Experiential Learning (2-6 Credits)

Supervised internship, independent study, or field work in global health conducted with oversight from faculty in the UMD Global Health program.

Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C- in GBHL200 and GBHL210.

Recommended: Upper level Global Health major courses.

Restriction: Must have earned a minimum of 60 credits; and Permission of SPH-Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health department.

GBHL389 Global Health Research (2-6 Credits)

Provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to earn academic credit for assisting a faculty member with their global health research. Research projects should address public health challenges through the lens of environmental, biological, geopolitical, socioeconomic, and cultural factors.

Recommended: Minimum grade of C- in GBHL200 and GBHL210.

Restriction: Permission of Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health department.

Repeatable to: 6 credits if content differs.

Additional Information: Students must identify a UMD faculty mentor prior to obtaining departmental permission.

GBHL399 Global Health Internship (2-6 Credits)

The Global Health internship course provides students with academic, research and professional development accompanying a time-limited, supervised period of professional experience carried out in a related professional organization or research setting.

Prerequisite: GBHL200 and GBHL210 completed with a C- or higher.

Restriction: Global Health major; 45 credits completed; permission of Global Health program required.

Repeatable to: 6 credits if content differs.

Additional Information: Students identify and secure their own internship placement. Prior to registration, Global Health majors must meet with an advisor and complete internship verification, expectations and responsibilities. This is completed the semester prior to beginning the internship.

GBHL497 Global Health Capstone (3 Credits)

In this seminar course, Global Health majors in their final semester integrate and apply interdisciplinary knowledge, skills, and perspectives to address a global health challenge. Capstone projects may focus on research, system, policy analysis; or intervention development and assessment. Students will align their global health interests with their career goals, preparing for their next academic or professional steps.

Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C- in GBHL200, GBHL210, EPIB301 and EPIB315; and must have completed or be enrolled in second GBHL Experiential Learning course.

Restriction: Global Health major in final semester; and must have earned more than 100 credits.
