Since 1951, students and faculty of University of Maryland have benefited from its membership in Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). ORAU provides science, health and workforce solutions that address national priorities and serve the public interest. Through our specialized teams of experts and access to a consortium of more than 170 institutions, ORAU works with federal, state, local and commercial customers to provide innovative scientific and technical solutions and help advance their missions. ORAU works with its member institutions to help their students and faculty gain access to federal research facilities throughout the country; to keep its members informed about opportunities for fellowship, scholarship, and research appointments; and to organize research alliances among its members.
ORAU manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that is dedicated to enabling critical scientific, research, and health initiatives of the department and its laboratory system by providing world class expertise in STEM workforce development, scientific and technical reviews, and the evaluation of radiation exposure and environmental contamination.
ORISE connects the most talented college students, recent graduates, postdocs, and faculty to STEM internship and fellowship programs closely aligned with the interests of a variety of research facilities, including those managed for DOE and other federal agencies. These STEM internship and fellowship programs are key to the recruitment and preparation of the next generation of our nation’s scientific workforce.
Applicants can find opportunities via Zintellect, a searchable database of research and non-research internships and fellowships at national laboratories and U.S. government agencies. Opportunities listed on Zintellect aim to strengthen the scientific and technical workforce in areas of science, transfer knowledge and technology to the academic community, and support the national commitment to science education. Faculty and students can participate in programs covering a wide variety of disciplines including business, earth sciences, epidemiology, engineering, physics, geological sciences, pharmacology, ocean sciences, biomedical sciences, nuclear chemistry, mathematics, and more. ORAU’s Research and University Partnerships Office (RUPO) actively works with its consortium of research-intensive universities to connect their expertise with government and private sector organizations and to create meaningful partnerships for innovation in scientific research and education. RUPO has a broad and deep knowledge of the capabilities and capacity of its member institutions, including specialized research centers/institutes and laboratories. RUPO has a well-established process for communicating opportunities and executing agreements to support research collaborations that provide value to our consortium while leveraging the expertise of ORAU subject matter experts and researchers.
