KORA101 Elementary Korean I (3 Credits)

Introduction to the Korean language. Primary emphasis on oral skills, but Hangul, the Korean alphabet, will also be introduced.

Prerequisite: Must have appropriate World Language Placement (WLP) score; and permission of ARHU-School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures department.

KORA102 Elementary Korean II (3 Credits)

Continued training in elementary spoken and written Korean.

Prerequisite: KORA101; or must have appropriate World Language Placement (WLP) score.

Restriction: Must be a non-Heritage student; and permission of instructor required for new students.

KORA103 Intensive Elementary Korean I (6 Credits)

Intensive introduction to the Korean language at the elementary level through a highly interactive approach, including oral, reading, and writing skills (Hangeul alphabet). Substantial cultural component familiarizes students with various aspects of Korean culture. Designed for students with no formal education in the Korean language. Taught in Korean.

Prerequisite: Must have appropriate World Language Placement (WLP) score.

Restriction: Must not be a native/fluent speaker of Korean; and must be in the Summer Language Institute; and must have permission of the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.

Credit Only Granted for: KORA101 or KORA103.

Additional Information: Native/fluent speakers of Korean or students who have previously attended school in Korea should take the WLP and see the Korean Program Advisor to identify the correct Korean course for which to register.

KORA104 Intensive Elementary Korean II (6 Credits)

Continuation of KORA103 or KORA101. Intensive training in elementary level Korean including formal and informal speech styles through a highly interactive approach. Continues to build and enhance accuracy in basic literacy skills, vocabulary, and grammar, as well as situational appropriateness. Substantial cultural component familiarizes students with various aspects of Korean culture. Taught in Korean.

Prerequisite: KORA101 or KORA103; or equivalent, as determined by the World Language Placement (WLP).

Restriction: Must not be a native/fluent speaker of Korean; and must be in the Summer Language Institute; and must have permission of the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.

Credit Only Granted for: KORA102 or KORA104.

KORA201 Intermediate Korean I (3 Credits)

An intermediate-level course designed for non-Heritage students. It begins the second year of instruction in the University's two-track Korean Program.

Prerequisite: KORA102; or permission of instructor.

KORA202 Intermediate Korean II (3 Credits)

The second stage of an intermediate-level course designed for non-Heritage students. It continues the second year of instruction in the University's two track Korean Program.

Prerequisite: KORA201; or permission of instructor.

KORA203 Intensive Intermediate Korean I (6 Credits)

Builds upon the foundation established in KORA104 or KORA102, further developing students' communicative competence in Korean. This course expands vocabulary and grammatical structures to enable more complex communication. Students will also continue to develop their reading and writing skills, expanding vocabulary and mastering fundamental grammatical structures, including present and past tense conjugations, particles, and sentence patterns. Students will also develop their understanding of Korean culture and etiquette through weekly cultural events.

Prerequisite: KORA102 or KORA104 or equivalent, as determined by the World Language Placement (WLP).

Restriction: Must not be a native/fluent speaker of Korean; and must be in the Summer Language Institute; and must have permission of the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.

Credit Only Granted for: KORA201 OR KORA203.

KORA204 Intensive Intermediate Korean II (6 Credits)

This course is a continuation of KORA203 or KORA201. This course will focus on developing fluency and accuracy in a wide range of communicative situations. This course introduces more nuanced grammatical structures, including various verb endings, complex sentence constructions, and idiomatic expressions. Emphasis is placed on developing students' narrative skills, presenting their interests, expressing their opinions, and understanding more complex texts and dialogues. Students will also refine their cultural understanding through hands-on experience and lectures.

Prerequisite: KORA201 or KORA203; or equivalent, as determined by the World Language Placement (WLP).

KORA241 History of the Korean Language (3 Credits)

The origins of the Korean language and its development from earliest recorded times to the present. The relationship of Korean to other languages. Taught in English.

KORA269 Special Topics in Study Abroad II (1-6 Credits)

Special topics course taken as part of an approved study abroad program.

Repeatable to: 15 credits if content differs.

KORA345 Korean Language and Linguistics (3 Credits)

An exploration of Korean language and society, in particular the role and nature of the alphabet, Korean sounds, lexical and grammatical structures, and usage in today's South Korea.

Prerequisite: KORA102 or KORA211; or permission of ARHU-School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures department.

KORA369 Special Topics in Study Abroad III (1-6 Credits)

Special topics course taken as part of an approved study abroad program.

Repeatable to: 15 credits if content differs.

KORA398 Special Topics in Korean Studies (3 Credits)

Study of particular aspect of Korean language, literature, and/or culture. Topic and language of instruction to be announced when course is offered.

Repeatable to: 9 credits if content differs.

KORA499 Independent Study Korean (1-3 Credits)

Independent study under faculty supervision.

Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

Repeatable to: 6 credits if content differs.
