The Department of Mathematics offers a minor in Mathematics for students majoring in other disciplines. The goal of the minor in Mathematics is to provide the student with significant mathematical skills and a perspective on the discipline.
The requirements for the minor include at least 22 credits (19 credits if exempted from MATH310) beyond first-year calculus and are outlined below:
| Course | Title | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| MATH241 | Calculus III | 4 |
| or MATH340 | Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations I (Honors) | |
| Select one of the following: | 3-4 | |
| Introduction to Linear Algebra | ||
| Linear Algebra for Scientists and Engineers | ||
| Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations II (Honors) | ||
| MATH310 | Introduction to Mathematical Proof (unless exempted) | 3 |
| Select one theoretical course from the following: | 3 | |
| Introduction to Abstract Algebra | ||
| Linear Algebra | ||
| Advanced Calculus I | ||
| Select one algebra course from the following: | 3 | |
| Applications of Linear Algebra | ||
| Algebraic Structures | ||
| Introduction to Abstract Algebra | ||

| Total Credits | 22-23 | |
Note: If additional credits are needed in order to fulfill the 22-credit (19 credits if exempted from MATH310) minimum, any 400-level MATH-STAT-AMSC courses except MATH478, MATH480-MATH484, MATH489, MATH498, and STAT464 are acceptable.
Other issues related to the minor in Mathematics:
- The minor in Mathematics is NOT open to Mathematics majors.
- The student will need to achieve at least a "C-" (1.7) in each minor course and an overall minor GPA of 2.0.
- No more than one of the 400-level courses for the minor in Mathematics may be taken at an institution other than the University of Maryland, College Park.
